Jan Ouwens was a user of Pocket. Now he is a satisfied customer of wallabag.it.

wallabag is a FOSS tool that you can self-host, or you can use their instance for a small fee. I chose the latter, because I’m lazy, I like supporting small FOSS developers, and everything is hosted safely in Europe.

New website for wallabag.it

wallabag.it was born in 2016 and the website hasn’t changed since this date.

No big changes. The main one is that it’s not hosted on the same webserver anymore than the web application available on app.wallabag.it. Like that, if the service encounters some issues, the website is still available.

The RSS feed has changed, the URL is now https://wallabag.it/en/blog/announcements/index.xml but there is a redirection between the old URL and the new one.

Like many of us, I was surprised with the Mozilla announcement about the shutdown of Pocket.

The surprise is now behind us and we have to prepare your journey to our service.

wallabag is a self hostable application for saving web pages: save and classify articles. Read them later. Freely.

For those who don’t want or can’t host wallabag by themselves, we launched wallabag.it on December 2016. wallabag.it is the quality service that you need to host wallabag. You have a quality hosting, a professional support, automatic upgrades and daily backups.

There are several subscriptions:

9€ per year
3€ for 3 months
25€ per year if you really love wallabag 🦘 and if you can pay this amount.

wallabag.it is almost 7 years old. Since the beginning, we have not changed the pricing.

Almost a year since my last email. But wallabag is still alive and active.

I just upgraded wallabag.it platform and here is the changelog:

the baggy theme has been deprecated and will be removed in next version (only the material theme will remain).
Delicious import (if you still have credentials for your account, just go https://del.icio.us/)
You can now list entries with annotations https://app.wallabag.it/annotated/list
You can now add a tag to a search results
A new API endpoint was added to retrieve the user configuration

Save articles from ATOM / RSS feeds

It was a long overdue feature: you can now have RSS or ATOM feeds directly into your wallabag account. Each hour, this feed is updated (or you can update it manually).

If you want to save an article from your favorite feed, you need to click on the save icon and that’s all.

For the time being, this feature is opened to users who have a 25€ subscription. It’s a beta-test phase. But in few days, it will be opened for all wallabag.it customers.

Dark side of wallabag

wallabag has finally a dark mode. You can enable it by clicking on the account icon.

Bugs fixed

This new version fixes a lot of bugs (you can see the changelog here)

Import tags from Pocket

When you imported data from Pocket, the tags weren’t fetched. It’s now fixed.

Invoices

I changed my billing tool. Now I use a self hosted and opensource application (Invoice Ninja). Some changes for you: for example, when you receive your invoice, you can now have a dashboard with your old invoices.

Due to a bug (which is now fixed), we resetted the IMAP setting. You need to create a new token. Sorry for this issue 😢

Invoices

On the subscription page, you can now retrieve all your invoices.

Tags edition is fixed

When you edited a tag from the tags list, the tag was deleted 😱 This bug is now fixed.

I will try to write to you here every week to give you some news about wallabag.it.

Save articles by email

It’s a looong request feature (https://github.com/wallabag/wallabag/issues/239 wow, 2013).

You can now save articles by sending an email. You need to enable this feature on your config screen (https://app.wallabag.it/config#set7).

You will have a private email address (something like save+your-username+secret-token@wallabag.it). Each URL in the body of the email will be save into your account.

How to learn a foreign language thanks to wallabag

As you know, wallabag is an application to save and archive web articles. It’s so useful if you don’t have time to read articles and if you want to be sure to keep a version of a web page (did you already imagine if your favorite website suddenly closes?).

With wallabag, you can save an article from your computer (thanks to our browser addons) and read it on your smartphone (thanks to our smartphone applications).

Blog

As you can see, we changed the blog. Technically, it was before based on wordpress, a famous blog engine. But for a little blog like ours, it was a little bit overkilled. Today, it’s a static website. Sources are available on Framagit.org.

Recent unavailabilities and optimizations

Maybe you saw that wallabag.it was unavailable on Thursday, 16 February.

We had a full disk space issue. We needed to see with our web hoster, web4all.fr, to increase the disk size. Today, this issue is fixed.

All wallabag.it websites unavailable on December, 22 during 8 hours

On December, 21 at 22pm (Paris time), our server didn’t respond. Our monitoring service alerted us and our websites were available quickly (websites were down for 17 minutes and 7 seconds).

Few minutes later, new downtime. When our server restarted, websites were still unavailable and our users saw this page:

The problem wasn’t detected immediatly and we saw it (thanks to some users on our Twitter account), we restarted our web server and all was OK at 8am (Paris time).

I started wallabag 4 years ago. It was a personal project. Today, this application — to save web articles and read them later on your computer, your smartphone, your tablet or even your ereader — is used by hundreds of people.

Quickly, wallabag took me more and more time. I decided to try to work officially for this project. That’s why wallabag.it was born.

For few euros per year (€12), you have an account with all the wallabag features. No need to install the application, no need to configure it: all is done for you.
